Job Description

The position of Paramedic is primarily responsible for providing prehospital and interfacility care and transport of medical and trauma patients.  Other duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring vehicle and equipment cleaning and maintenance
  • Monitoring supply inventory and ordering supplies
  • General care and cleaning of EMS facility
  • Assisting with training responsibilities as needed
  • Assisting with billing and documentation compliance
  • Participating in Continuous Quality Improvement program management
  • Performing patient care report audits
  • Assisting with development of patient care protocols
  • Assisting in development of service policies and procedures
  • Assisting in general service administration duties

This position reports directly to the EMS Service Director and has supervisory responsibilities over the Algona EMS volunteer staff.  Scheduling will require working nights/holidays/weekends on a rotating schedule.  This position requires that the employee cover some on-call hours and would necessitate that during on-call time, the employee remains within a reasonable response time of the EMS facility and be available to respond immediately to calls for service.  Specific scheduled hours will be determined upon selection of a qualified candidate.

Minimum Qualifications

The following certifications, skills, and abilities are required for this position:

  • Currently Iowa-licensed paramedic
  • High school graduate
  • Satisfactory background check including criminal history, drug/alcohol screening, and driving record
  • Physical ability to meet the demands of the position: ability to lift equipment and patients with assistance of a partner, adequate vision (corrected or uncorrected), ability to communicate with the general demographic of the community
  • Ability to use general office equipment and patient care reporting software

Preferred Qualifications

Extra consideration will be given to candidates who possess the following qualifications or experience:

  • Work experience in healthcare or emergency medical services
  • Critical Care Paramedic endorsement
  • Previous supervisory experience, especially in public safety, military, or civil defense positions
