Former West Hancock Teacher Facing Felony Charges

–A former teacher at West Hancock Schools has been arrested and charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a minor student.

According to the Britt Police Department, Officers were notified in June of 2022 about a possible inappropriate relationship between former West Hancock School teacher Steve M. Heston and a minor student. The department initiated an investigation at that time, which eventually led to warrants for Heston’s arrest.

Earlier today, Heston was taken into custody and booked into the Winnebago County Jail on charges of Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee and Enticing a Minor, both Class D Felonies. Heston is awaiting an initial court appearance.

The Britt Police Department received assistance on this case from the Hancock County Attorney’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Kanawha Police Department, the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force.
