–Music Instructor Todd Herbst Ulmer is the 2023 recipient of the Class of 1979 Excellence in Teaching award, presented by the Algona Community School Foundation.

According to the ACSF, Herbst-Ulmer was nominated by two separate parents of students this season, as one nomination stated that “He has a way of making class fun, exciting, and memorable, as well as educational for all his students.” The nomination goes on to say, “The fine arts are extremely important for child development, yet it takes real skill to present music education in a way that is not considered boring to students who are used to being stimulated with the latest technology at every turn.”

The award was created by the AHS Class of 1979 following their 20-year reunion, as a way to recognize teachers that go above and beyond their prescribed duties to assist students.

Herbst-Ulmer received the award on Friday, during a ceremony on the last day of classes in the district. His name has now been added to the plaque for public display in the Administration Office, while he also receives an engraved school bell and a $200 prize.
