–The new skatepark in downtown Algona is back open and ready for use by skaters, roller bladers and bicyclists.

City officials say it is ready for everyone to enjoy, after most of the work, which began last fall, was completed this past week. Final grading, site restoration, and lighting around the skatepark will be completed this fall, as a part of the overall Central Park redevelopment project.

The skatepark offers several features, including a large bowl with quarter pipe around the edge, a “volcano” in the middle, ramps, panned benches, and other “street” features. Designs for the skatepark were gathered from local skate enthusiasts who attended public meetings and feedback sessions about the park.

The skatepark improvements are part of the wider redevelopment of Central Park in Algona, which includes a new splashpad, updates to the shelter house, adding a perimeter walking path around and sidewalks within the park.

The city plans to hold a grand opening and skating demonstration at a later date this summer.
