–The Algona School Board appointed a new successor trustee for the district’s largest scholarship fund during their meeting this week. Superintendent Joe Carter gave the board a brief history of the Thompson Scholarship and discussed why the changes are being made.

Carter says they have been working with the previous trustee to find the appropriate successor.

Since the scholarship fund was created prior to the existence of the Algona Community School Foundation, the Algona School Board decides where the trust is held. Carter says the scholarship fund generously helps dozens of Algona High School graduates each year.

The Thompson Scholarship was created by Willard Thompson in honor of his sister Ella, who served many years as a public librarian in Algona. Awards are need based and go to students who would need to borrow money or work their way through to secure at an Iowa post-secondary school.
