–If you’ve driven along Highway 169 in Algona recently, you probably noticed the large letters spelling out “ALGONA” in the small park at the intersection of Jones and State Streets. The sign is a product of the 2022-2023 Leadership Algona class, who set out to create a structure that would create pride and serve as a landmark for years to come. Amy Whitacre with the Algona Chamber of Commerce was part of the Leadership Algona class, and she says they couldn’t be happier with the way the project turned out.

Members of the leadership class worked with city staff, members of the parks and recreation commission and the city council to discuss plans and get approval for the project. The class also held several fundraisers to offset costs of the project, and Whitacre says they received tremendous support from area businesses and residents on that front.

Plaques honoring those who sponsored the project will be added to the site this spring, along with additional lighting. Leadership Algona is a program from the Algona Chamber of Commerce that began in 2005. Each year, participants are introduced to a variety of local leadership opportunities and work together to plan and execute a project that will benefit the community. You can learn more about the program by contacting the Algona Chamber of Commerce at 515-295-7201.
