–The Algona City Council acknowledged a request for voluntary annexation and set a date for a public hearing regarding the proposal during their meeting this week. The annexation is contingent on the landowner receiving approval to construct a solar energy facility on site in coordination with Algona Municipal Utilities. AMU General Manager John Bilsten addressed the council, and shared details of what the project could mean for the city.
The land is located just north of the city limits, on the west side of Highway 169. Bilsten says the agreement is not between AMU and the property owner, but a 3rd party and the property owner.
Bilsten was asked why the project would only be using about 15 of the more than 50 acres on the property.
The public hearing on the proposed annexation will be held during the council’s meeting on November 4th.
