–A Garner man began serving his prison sentence last week after being convicted of vehicular homicide earlier this year in connection with the death of an Algona man in 2022.

According to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies transported 47-year-old Brian Michael Freeman to the Oakdale Medical Classification Center last Wednesday, as he had been held in the Palo Alto County jail following his conviction.

Freeman was found guilty of Homicide by Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol following a 3-day trial in August.

Court documents showed that on June 12th, 2022, Freeman was driving westbound on US Highway 18 near Cylinder when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and crossed the centerline, colliding with an eastbound vehicle driven by 26-year-old Landon Richard Schiek of Algona. Schiek died in the crash, while Freeman was airlifted to MercyOne Medical Center in Mason City.

Back on October 11th, Judge Nancy Whittenburg sentenced Freeman to maximum of 25-years in prison.
