–A program that helps seniors select the Medicare plan that best suits their needs saved area residents a substantial amount of money in 2024. The Senior Health Insurance Information Program, better known as SHIIP, is run by volunteers and assisted over 650 individuals in Kossuth County last year. Marla Steier is the lead SHIIP volunteer locally, and she tells KLGA News that some seniors may not know what changes they can make on an annual basis and how it may help them save money.

Steier says that while they are most busy during the Medicare open enrollment period in October, November and December, they can be reached at any time.

Even if you’re not quite 65, Steier says the SHIIP volunteers can help you with any questions

Statistics provided by Kossuth Regional Health Center show that in 2024, SHIIP volunteers were able to save Kossuth County residents over $250,000. For more information about the program, you can call KRHC at 515-295-2451 and ask for a SHIIP volunteer.
