Warm Temps Problematic for Ice Fishing

The ice fishing derby Saturday morning at Smith Lake that is being held as a part of Algona’s Frostbite Olympics is still going on as scheduled, however the unseasonably warm weather we’re having is likely going to put an end to the ice fishing season in most of Iowa. DNR spokesman Mick Klemesrud says it hasn’t been a great season up to this point either.

He says continued days of above freezing temperatures make more and more ice disappear.

There are a few areas in north Iowa where the ice is still nice for fishing.

He says you should do a little research on ice conditions before you head out.

Klemesrud says remember the safety guidelines wherever you go to ice fish.

Officials with the Algona Chamber of Commerce tell KLGA News that they are recommending participants wear ice cleats or ice walkers because there is no snowpack on the ice to provide traction. Another note for Saturday is that vehicles will not be allowed to drive or park within the derby area. The ice fishing derby will run from 8-10:30 AM Saturday at Smith Lake.
