The Algona girls wrestling team saw each of their three state qualifiers earn at least a top 8 finish during day one of the Class 1A IGHSAU State Wrestling Championships Thursday in Coralville.
Mara Davis, Malyn Davis and Regan Jensen each went 2-1 on the day to secure a state medal, with each winning their opening round bout before dropping their quarterfinal matches and bouncing back to win in the blood round.
Mara Davis opened the day at 100-pounds with a 5-1 win over Penelope Wearmouth of Martensdale-St. Mary’s. In the Quarterfinals, Davis dropped a 8-5 decision in Sudden Victory to the #3 seed Lily Webster of Colfax-Mingo, sending her to the consolation bracket. In the blood round, Davis used 4-nearfall points in the 2nd period to defeat #4 seed Cassie McKeen of Spirit Lake. Friday morning, Davis will take on the #7 seed Jazz Christensen of SWAT, a combined program from Southwest Iowa.
Malyn Davis came into the tournament seeded 12th, but picked up an opening round win over the #5 seed Josilynne Lennon from Akron-Westfield by a score of 5-2. Davis then dropped her Quarterfinal match to Madison Swenson of Osage before coming back to get a pin against Destiny Fry of SWAT in the blood round to secure a top 8 finish. Davis will go up against the #8 seed Keston Pratt of Williamsburg Friday morning.
Regan Jensen entered the tournament seeded 8th, and picked up a 10-3 win over Kasee Huss of MOC-Floyd Valley in the 1st round. Jesen then dropped a 7-2 match in the quarterfinals to #1 Haley Glade of Earlham, before coming back and securing her state medal with a 4-1 win of Julie Maylum of Perry. Next up for Jensen is the #12 seed Riley Marcum of Missouri Valley.
All three Bulldogs can still finish as high as 3rd. A win in their first match Friday would move them to the Consolation Semifinals, while a loss would put them into the 7th place match.
