–A number of musical performers will take the stage at the Wilcox Performing Arts Center this weekend in an attempt to win college scholarship money. The contest is hosted by the Iowa Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters, which is headquartered in Algona. Group spokesperson Julie Murphy tells KLGA News the competition will take place from 12-4 PM Saturday.
The Haggard-Twogood Charitable Trust is a financial supporter of the INSAL chapter and for the scholarship fund, which has already handed out over $15,000 since it was formed two years ago. Murphy says they will hand out four scholarships this weekend.
This is the second year that this scholarship competition has been hosted in Algona, and Murphy says it has already grown.
The competition is open to the viewing public, but Murphy says it is not a regular type of performance.
The competition is open to performers aged 18-28 who are either in college or will be in the coming year. The candidates will come from universities such as Drake, Morningside, and Grinnell amongst others, and must be an Iowa resident, or reside in a state that does not have an official chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters.
