–Students at Bishop Garrigan High School participated in a real-life demonstration on the importance of seat belt usage on Friday. Trooper Paul Gardner with the Iowa State Patrol tells KLGA News that Bishop Garrigan is an Iowa Safe School, a safety program designated for the promotion of seatbelt safety.

While the simulator only demonstrates a 10 MPH crash, Gardner says students get the picture of what can happen if they don’t buckle up in the car.

Gardner says many people, not just teenagers, may feel they don’t need to buckle up if they’re sitting in the back seat.

The Iowa State Patrol is highlighting the importance of seat belt usage as we are about to enter the 100 deadliest days of the year. Public Safety officials use that term to mark the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when statistics show the majority of fatalities occur on highways across the country.
