–The Algona Community School District is alerting parents to an online trend that can damage their students’ Chromebook and possibly cause a dangerous situation to occur. Technology Director Jedd Freeburg sent a letter to parents Friday describing the challenge which encourages students to put metal objects into the USB port of the Chromebook. Freeburg tells KLGA News that kids may think it’s cool to try this challenge that can be found on various social media platforms.
Freeburg says if a student puts a metal object, such as a paper clip or a tin foil wrapper, into the USB port on their Chromebook, their parents may have to pay for a replacement.
Freeburg says these Chromebooks are supposed to be used for schoolwork, and not online pranks.
Parents that have questions can contact Freeburg by calling 515-295-3528 or their child’s building administrator.
