–Law Enforcement and Communications officials from across Iowa are urging local leaders to contact Governor Reynolds and suggest she veto part of a bill that would allow the state to collect fees from local 911 boards. Kossuth County IT Director Derek Olson addressed the Board of Supervisors during their meeting Tuesday to highlight the issue and ask for their cooperation.
The fee was a late addition to Senate File 659, and it would allow the state to charge undetermined fees to the local 911 board. Olson says paying this fee would take away from the services they can provide.
Olson says if the fee remains in place, it could cause 911 boards to seek property tax funding.
Members of the Iowa State Sheriff’s and Deputies Association (ISSDA), Iowa Police Chiefs Association (IPCA), Iowa Emergency Management Association (IEMA), Iowa Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), and the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-Iowa Chapter (APCO) held a joint press conference in Des Moines on Monday afternoon to urge Governor Reynolds to veto this section of the bill.
