–The Algona City Council discussed ways to try and fill the open positions on the police department during a special meeting on Monday evening. Police Chief Bo Miller addressed the council members and says the situation here is similar to many departments across the area.

Miller says many communities have upped the starting salaries for new officers, making it hard for Algona to compete from a financial standpoint.

City Administrator Jacob Tjaden says there are a few  options they can try to make the openings in Algona more attractive to applicants.

Miller says they are looking to hire a couple of new officers as soon as possible. The council will discuss more options at their upcoming meeting on July 7th.
