–The Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge will open their auto tour route this week as the primary nesting season comes to an end. Refuge Manager Ed Meendering tells KLGA News the wet summer isn’t ideal for the wildlife on the refuge.
Despite those high-water levels, Meendering says there’s still plenty to see on the refuge, located 6 miles east of Bancroft on Kossuth County Road A42.
Meendering says that drivers should take their time, especially if we keep getting rain.

The tour route will open on August 1st and can be accessed from sunrise to sunset through September 21st. Visitors can drive through the 4.5-mile route with their car, truck, or side-by-side UTV, beginning at the Refuge headquarters. If you would like to stop in and look around the refuge headquarters, Meendering says to call ahead as limited staffing means there isn’t always someone in the office.
