–The Algona Public Library recently received close to $20,000 in funding after asking patrons to create an account on a website designed for self-learning. Young Adult Librarian Sonya Harsha tells KLGA News that the funding stems from an effort last year where they had area residents create accounts on a website called The Achievery.

The effort was sponsored by the National Summer Learning Association, with the support of AT & T. Harsha says their initial effort was to create enough accounts to receive around $9,000 in grant funding.

Harsha says they went well beyond the initial goal of creating 250 new accounts and ended up winning the second award for the contest, which was an additional $10,000. Now she says they plan to use those funds to expand areas of the library that can host events where participants may make a mess.
