–An open burning ban is now in place across Kossuth County as the current dry conditions present a risk to life and property should a blaze get out of control.
Kossuth County Emergency Management Coordinator Charissa Mueller made the announcement Friday, after making a request to the State Fire Marshall’s office this week. The warm weather across northern Iowa in the last few weeks has combined with no precipitation to dry out fields.
The burn ban will remain in place until conditions around the area change to the point where open burning does not pose a risk to life or property.
Currently, Hancock and Dubuque are the only other counties in the state with a burn ban in place.
The latest map from the US Drought Monitor shows abnormally dry conditions creeping back into northwest Iowa after heavy rains over the summer removed all drought from the state.
