–Alliant Energy is seeking a construction permit for a project in northern Kossuth County that would add a battery storage system to the Golden Plains Wind Farm in an effort to increase capacity in the power grid. Alliant Project Manager Justin Foss addressed the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors during the public discussion part of their meeting on Wednesday.

Alliant is looking to build a 75-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in rural Kossuth County between Lakota and Buffalo Center. The storage system would become part of the Golden Plains Wind Farm, which is located across northern Kossuth and Winnebago counties. Company officials tell KLGA News they received approval from the Iowa Utilities Commission for the project this fall and are now seeking local approval.

Alliant is seeking a permit with the idea they could begin construction early next year and have the project online later in 2026. The Golden Plains Wind Farm went online in March of 2020. It’s 82 wind turbines produce around 200 Megawatts of electricity, enough to power an average of 73,000 homes per year.
