–The status of a proposed battery energy storage project in Kossuth County is up in the air after the Board of Supervisors declined to over-rule the county’s Board of Adjustment. Officials with Alliant Energy proposed a joint-development agreement between the energy company and Kossuth County as a way to move forward with the Golden Plains Battery Energy Storage System after the county’s Board of Adjustment voted against the plan in November. Supervisors’ Chairman Carter Nath spoke to the Alliant representatives on hand during the board’s meeting this week.
Kossuth County Attorney Todd Holmes addressed the board and the Alliant officials that were present at Tuesday’s meeting. He says if Alliant were to resubmit the project to the Board of Adjustment and get their approval, the Supervisors could sign off on it at that time.
Nath asked the Alliant officials if the project had to be built in Kossuth County, or if other areas were possible. Alliant spokesman Justin Foss says it made sense to place it here.
Board of Adjustment decisions can be appealed in Iowa by filing a motion in the local district court, but Iowa code says that an appeal must be filed within 30 days of the board’s ruling.
