–The Algona City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that will establish a Social District in the downtown area. City Administrator Jacob Tjaden presented the ordinance to the council and explained how it will work once it is established.
Tjaden says once the district is established by ordinance, it would take an amendment to make any changes.
The Social District will cover most of the downtown area.

The Iowa legislature passed a bill this session allowing cities the opportunity to establish Social Districts where people can legally possess and consume alcoholic beverages outdoors on sidewalks and streets. That bill requires cities to pass a specific ordinance to put a social district in place. The Algona City Council will have a 2nd reading of the ordinance during their next meeting, putting it into place before the annual Founder’s Day celebration.
