–Officials with the Iowa Cancer Registry and the Iowa Cancer Consortium presented local numbers from their 99 Counties project during an online forum Tuesday. The project details what types of cancer are being found in each of Iowa’s 99 counties, noting their frequency and outcome. Amanda Kahl is a Research Specialist with the State Health Registry of Iowa, and during the presentation she highlighted the five most prevalent cancer types in Kossuth County, which include Female Breast, Prostate, Colorectal, Lung, and Melanoma.
Early detection is the single most effective way to improve cancer survival rates, and Kahl says the majority of area women are up to date on their breast health exams.
While many are familiar with screening procedures for different types of cancer, Kahl says most Iowans are not screened for Lung cancer.
A couple of different factors play a role in the number of lung cancer cases across Iowa.
Kossuth County’s highest cancer rate compared to other counties is Melanoma. Kahl says there really isn’t a screening procedure for melanoma, but there are warning signs.
