A pair of area baseball players and an area coach are set to take part in the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association All-Star series.
The annual series brings together many of the state’s top graduating senior baseball players to compete in a showcase event celebrating their outstanding high school careers. Players are selected by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association, providing one final opportunity to represent their schools.
Bishop Garrigan baseball coach Rob Meister will be an assistant coach on the Small Schools West team.
One of the players selected to the Small Schools West team is Bishop Garrigan’s Tate Foertsch. Foertsch earned the Top of Iowa West Player of the Year honors after leading the conference with a .512 batting average and .762 slugging percentage. Foertsch also pitched his way to a 3.78 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 53.2 innings pitched.
Algona’s Tate Garman also will be on the Small Schools West team. The first team all-conference selection in the North Central hit .461 this season with a class 3A leading 50 stolen bases. Garman also recorded a 3.85 ERA in 20 innings pitched.
The Small Schools West team will play the Large Schools West team at 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon at Kirkwood Community College. They’ll play again at 6:30 from Mount Mercy against the Large Schools East team, then will pick things back up on Saturday at 10:30 against the Small Schools East team, also at Kirkwood.
