–Kossuth County Conservation will host an event Sunday afternoon that can be fun and educational for all ages. Assistant County Naturalist Julie Fosado tells KLGA News they will host a Monarch tagging event on the south side of Smith Lake where they will catch adult butterflies and place a little sticker on them.
The monarchs are currently in the process of migrating south to Mexico, and Fosado says they are usually pretty easy to find near Smith Lake.
The conservation group Monarch Watch started the tracking program, trying to learn more about the migration patterns these insects take. Fosado says they hope families will come out Sunday afternoon and help them locate some butterflies.
Participants are asked to meet at the enclosed shelter house on the south side of Smith Lake at 4 PM Sunday. The event will be held weather permitting, so with rain in the forecast, anyone interested is asked to check the Water’s Edge Nature Center Facebook page for updates.
