Sierra Club Raises Concerns About Power Needs of Data Centers

The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club says the large data centers that are planned for the state will bring pollution and pose health risks. The group’s news conference earlier this week featured Brian Campbell, the Executive Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Campbell was the executive director of the Iowa Environmental Council before taking his current job and says he still lives in Des Moines. He says the data centers are creating their own issues when it comes to power.

The Duane Arnold nuclear plant near Palo is on track to be restarted to help power a data center. Campbell says that brings another health risk.

The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club says there needs to be some statewide guardrails to increase transparency and accountability about data centers and their impacts.
