Three Algona Bulldogs Place at State Wrestling

Algona boys wrestling wrapped up the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Saturday with their final three remaining wrestlers competing.

At 113, Jake Zabka won by fall over Collin Cassady of West Liberty in the consolation semifinal round. Zabka would lose by 10-3 decision in the 3rd place match to Kaden Weber of Nevada to finish 4th. Zabka moves to 4th place on the all time career wins list at Algona.

At 126, Barrett Morgan was defeated in the 7th place match by Mason Avila of Decorah in a 5-3 decision. Morgan wraps up his freshman campaign with an 8th place finish at state and 45 wins, the second most wins in a single season in school history.

At 138, Tate Slagle won in the consolation semifinals by 8-3 decision over Tyler Wieland of Independence. Slagle would also win the 3rd place match to take bronze, defeating Knoxville’s Luke Spaur with a 4-0 decision. Slagle’s 47 wins this season mark a new Algona school record.

Algona finished 15th overall in class 2A as a team, scoring 55 points, while Osage finished 1st with 175.5 points.
