–The Algona City Council recently approved accepting grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration to cover 90% of the cost to relocate the runway at the Algona Municipal Airport. Deputy City Administrator Barb Smith tells KLGA News that the first phase of construction will begin around the middle of August.
The grant is for an amount around $1.8 Million, with the second phase of the project set to get rolling in 2024.
When the work begins this August 100th Avenue will be closed between US Highway 18 and County Road B40. Smith says the work will not shut down the airport completely.
The runway is being relocated because the FAA has determined it sits too close to Highway 18, thus causing approaching aircraft to come in at an angle that is too low as it crosses the highway. The runway will be pushed back 200 feet to the Southeast, which will cut across 100th Avenue, which is why the road will be closed.
