–A Swea City man will serve 2-years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of Involuntary Manslaughter earlier this year in Kossuth County District Court.

Court documents filed on Wednesday show Judge Don Courtney sentenced 53-year-old Robert Dwaine Laverty to a term of no more than 2-years in prison in connection with the death of Casey Tobin back in April of 2021. He has been ordered to pay a fine of $855 and have no contact with the Tobin family for a period of five years.

Laverty agreed to the plea deal back in May, avoiding trial on a charge of Voluntary Manslaughter, which can carry a 10-year prison sentence.

Laverty and Tobin were involved in an altercation in the evening hours of April 3rd, 2021. The incident ended when Laverty struck Tobin, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the pavement. Tobin died of the injuries he sustained three days later.

Laverty will be credited with time already served. He has been ordered to surrender himself by 10 AM Friday to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department for transfer to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale.
