–It’s been a week since a school shooting in Perry left one student dead and 7 others injured, leaving other schools across the state to review their safety protocols. Superintendent Joe Carter spoke with KLGA News recently to discuss safety measures that have been implemented in the Algona Community School District over the last few years. Each building is locked through the day, with access controlled by staff. New security cameras with facial recognition software have also been added to the district’s buildings.
Carter says beyond those safety features, they have also tried to implement prevention measures across the district.
Many schools across the state, including Algona, have received threats of violence over the last few years. Carter says they have received tremendous support from local law enforcement when these situations arise.
Carter says they are hopeful they never have to implement any of these plans, but they are prepared just in case the unthinkable happens here.
