–A Burt man who passed away earlier this month is being honored as the latest “1440 Citizen of the Month” award winner.

Kossuth County Sheriff Roger Fisher announced this week that Martin McGuire was nominated for his strong work ethic, serving as a father figure for his employees and taking care of others in their time of need. McGuire, who ran his own trucking company, took care of the ditch line going in to Burt beginning in 1980, where he planted trees, mowed and kept the area clean.

McGuire was known to give away possessions to help others, and even donated burial plots to families in need of assistance following the loss of a loved one.

When McGuire was selected for the award, Sheriff Fisher learned he was ill and hospitalized in Mason City. When told of the award prior to his passing, McGuire’s family says he was honored and proud to know his kindness over the years was being recognized. McGuire’s daughters accepted the award on his behalf.

If you know someone who lives or works in Kossuth County that demonstrates a positive and caring attitude towards others, you can nominate them for the “1440” award by emailing Sheriff Fisher at [email protected] or by filling out the form available on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
