–Summit Carbon Solutions and POET announced a partnership Monday that will add 17 more ethanol facilities to Summit’s proposed carbon capture pipeline project.

Officials with both companies announced the partnership that would facilitate the capture, transportation, and permanent storage of 4.7 million metric tons of Carbon Dioxide from the 17 POET bioprocessing plants annually.

The companies say that the 5 POET plants in South Dakota will be included in Summit’s upcoming application in that state. In Iowa, separate applications will be filed as Summit is currently waiting on a decision from the Iowa Utilities Board.

POET currently operates 34 bioprocessing facilities across the Midwest, including one in Palo Alto County near Emmetsburg, and is headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Summit is seeking approval to construct a carbon capture pipeline that would take Carbon Dioxide produced at over 30 ethanol plants across Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska and ship it to a permanent underground storage site in North Dakota. If constructed, the project would travel through Kossuth County.

The Iowa Utilities Board has not publicly stated when they will make a decision on Summit’s construction permit application.
