–Residents along South Main Street addressed the Algona City Council during their meeting this week to discuss problems with the city’s sanitary sewer system. Heavy rains in late May caused sewers to back up into homes for the second time since the city rebuilt the road and put in new sewer lines nearly a decade ago. Jaclyn Hoover lives in the 200 Block of South Main Street, and she is one of the residents looking for answers.
Algona received over 5 inches of rain during a 12-hour window from May 20th to the 21st, causing sewer problems for many residents. Hoover says this is an issue that the city needs to fix, as previous remedies did not solve the problem.
Deputy City Administrator Barb Smith says they are working to find a solution that can be implemented in the near future.
Governor Kim Reynolds declared Kossuth County a disaster area on May 21st, which means area residents who suffered damage can apply for state assistance to help with their recovery efforts. Those recovery efforts may have taken a hit Tuesday night, when another torrential rain event brought over 4-inches of rain to parts of Algona.
