–Area pickleball enthusiasts still have time to sign up for a tournament next weekend in Algona that will benefit the Kossuth County Sheriffs Department K9 Unit. Deputy Mark McGregor is one of the K9 handlers for the Sheriff’s Department, and he says they really didn’t know what to expect when they organized the event for the first-time last year.

The tournament drew a handful of teams from out of the area last year, including a duo from the Iowa Great Lakes area that ended up taking first place. McGregor says last year’s tournament helped them bring in a new K9 Officer for the department.

The “Top Dog” tournament will begin at 9AM on Saturday, July 13th at the South Park Pickleball Courts in Algona, with registration beginning at 8:30. Teams will be able to sign up the day of the tournament, but preregistration can be done by calling the Sheriff’s Office at 515-295-3514.

The cost is $50 for your 2-person team in a double-elimination style tournament, with cash prizes being awarded to the top three finishers. If you’re not quite up for sharing your talents on the court, there are T-Shirts available for purchase to help support the K9 program. You can view them by going to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
