–The Algona School Board approved the hiring of a School Resource Officer during their meeting Monday evening to begin serving the district in the 2025-2026 school year. Superintendent Joe Carter addressed the board prior to the vote, noting that many districts either already have an SRO in place or plan on adding one in the near future.

The cost of bringing in an SRO would be split between the school district and the city of Algona, with the school paying 75% of the costs. Carter says initial estimates place that number at close to $100,000.

Carter says having the SRO in place will make students and staff safer.

The officer would be based out of the High School/Middle School building, but would have a presence across the district, along with school activities.

Carter says they will work with the city on bringing in the right candidate for the position.

City Administrator Jacob Tjaden addressed the board briefly, saying they will begin the hiring process in February and March, and hope to have someone hired by June.
