Law Enforcement officers from across the state stopped in Algona Sunday to present a “Purple Heart” award to the family of Officer Kevin Cram. Fred Lepely of Davenport serves as President of the Iowa State Police Association, and he tells KLGA News that their version of the Purple Heart was conceived back in 2013.

The ISPA Purple Heart award is granted to any sworn Iowa peace officer who has been seriously, critically, or fatally injured the performance of law enforcement duty. Judy Kellen of Sioux City is the Past President of the ISPA, and she described the honor as bittersweet.

Algona Police Chief Bo Miller says honors such as these help to keep Officer Cram’s memory alive.

Since its inception in 2013, over 20 Officers from around the state have been awarded the ISPA Purple Heart. You can find out more at www.ispaonline.com/.
