–The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department is launching a fundraising effort to replace one of their K9 Officers as the animal approaches retirement. Deputy Tyler Harmon works alongside Kovu, a 100-pound pure bred German Shepherd, and he tells KLGA News the K9 is approaching 10-years-old.

Harmon says they work with a European company that specializes in training dogs for law enforcement agencies around the world.

When you include training costs, acquiring a new K9 Officer can cost anywhere from $15,000-$20,000.

Anyone who would like to assist with the fundraising effort can send contributions to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office at 121 West State Street in Algona. If you write a check, you can simply put K9 fund in the memo line to make sure it goes towards replacing Kovu.
