–Three Algona men have been taken into custody in connection to an alleged assault and child abduction that was reported in Storm Lake Sunday morning.
According to the Storm Lake Police Department, Officers responded to a residence on the community’s northside just after 10:40 AM Sunday after receiving a report that individuals had entered the home, assaulted a woman and forcibly removed her two children. The victim reported that the suspects threatened to harm the children if she contacted authorities and took her cell phone to prevent her from calling the police.
Officers responding to the scene were able to obtain a description of the suspect vehicle, and utilized investigative technology resources to determine the make, model, license plate number, and last know direction of travel. Officials then sent out a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) broadcast to area law enforcement agencies, identifying the suspect vehicle as a blue Nissan Altima with Nevada license plates.
While Police in Storm Lake worked to obtain an Amber Alert broadcast, the suspect vehicle was stopped by law enforcement officials in Algona. Three suspects were detained and eventually transported back to Storm Lake to be booked into the Buena Vista County Jail. One of the suspects was identified as the estranged father of the children who were taken earlier in the day.
The suspects have been identified as 24-year-old Carlos Daniel Garciarena, 22-year-old Mailet De La Caridad Monteagudo, and 19-year-old Sammy Tarik Shamma, all from Algona.
Garcianera is charged with:
**Assault Committed by a Person Against Whom a Protection Order has been Issued (Class D Felony)
** 1st Degree Burglary (Class B Felony)
** 2 counts of Child Stealing (Class C Felony)
** 2 counts of Child Endangerment Causing Bodily Injury (Class D Felony)
** Impersonating a Public Official (Aggravated Misdemeanor)
** Obstruction of Communication Devices (Simple Misdemeanor)
Montegudo and Shamma are both facing charges of:
** 1st Degree Burglary (Class B Felony)
** 2 counts of Child Stealing (Class C Felony)
** Impersonating a Public Official (Aggravated Misdemeanor)
Each suspect is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
The mother sustained injuries during the assault and was taken to Buena Vista Reigonal Medical Center where she was treated and released. The two children sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident.
