–The Algona City Council awarded a contract to a Central Iowa firm this week to begin work on the Airport Runway Extension project later this year. Deputy City Administrator Barb Smith tells KLGA News the city will only pay a portion of the cost to move the runway further south, away from Highway 18.
Smith says this is the first phase of the runway extension project.
The extension is being mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration to move the runway back from Highway 18.
Cole Excavating LLC is based out of Greene, Iowa. Work is expected to begin later this summer or in early fall. The runway extension will force the closure of 100th Avenue between Highway 18 and McGregor Road.
