Algona Man Cited After Striking Railroad Crossing Near LuVerne

–An Algona man was cited following a 1-vehicle rollover accident just north of LuVerne early Sunday morning.

According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Austin Brown was traveling northbound on County Road P60 in a 2014 Chevy Silverado, just north of the LuVerne city limits around 3AM Sunday. The accident report states Brown drove off the roadway to the right, striking a railroad crossing signal post.

The post and the truck traveled some 50-yards before contacting the ground again, at which point the truck rolled over and ended up back on its tires out in a farm field. The report states that Brown was picked up by a friend and did not report the accident at the time. The Deputy noted that the vehicle smelled of alcohol when he arrived at the scene.

Brown was cited for failure to maintain control. The truck was considered a total loss, with damage estimated at $20,000.

Damage to the railroad crossing signal, which is owned by Union Pacific, was estimated at $15,000.
