Two Algona Wrestlers Alive After Day One of State

–The Algona Girls Wrestling team has 2 competitors in contention for a medal following Day #1 of the Girls State Wrestling Championships in Coralville.

Seniors Harley Tobin and Gretchen Gorham will wrestle Friday morning in the 4th round of the consolation bracket, each needing a single win to guarantee a top 8 finish.

Tobin started the day 2-0 with a pair of pins before falling to Chloe Sheffield of Decorah in the Quarterfinal round Thursday night. Tobin will face Sierra Becker of Indianola in the blood round Friday morning, with the winner earning a state medal.

Gorham opened the tournament with a pin, before dropping a 2nd round match to Elaine Babcock of Pella. Gorham rebounded by winning a pair of consolation matches Thursday night to advance to the blood round. Gorham will go up against Kamryn Steines of Decorah on Friday morning.

Junior Malyn Davis and freshman Reagan Haynes both went 2-2 on Thursday, bowing out of the tournament in the round of 16. Freshman Laura Stohr went 1-2 on Thursday, while Junior Abbie Gorham dropped both of her bouts.

Action resumes at 10 AM Friday, with live coverage of each Bulldog match on KLGZ 98.5 FM/1600 AM.
