Bishop Garrigan 52
The season has come to an end for the Bishop Garrigan boys basketball team, as the Golden Bears were defeated 61-52 in the class 1A – district 3 title game by Lake Mills on Tuesday night.
The Golden Bears controlled the pace early, taking a 14-10 lead after one, behind three three pointers by Michael Joyce. The Bulldogs inched ahead in the 2nd quarter, taking a six point lead at one point, a lead that was cut to three when Joyce drained a three pointer from half court at the buzzer to make the score 29-26 Lake Mills.
Lake Mills continued to extend their lead gradually in the third in spite of Top of Iowa West Player of the Year Lance Helming sitting out the final 4 and a half minutes of the quarter after picking up his fourth personal foul. Lake Mills led 44-39 at the end of three.
Five points was as close as Bishop Garrigan would get in the fourth, as the Golden Bars end the season at 15-10 with the loss, while Lake Mills moves to 23-1 and will face Remsen St. Mary’s Saturday night, as the Hawks beat George-Little Rock 42-39 to advance. Lake Mills now has 11 consecutive wins over the Golden Bears.
Michael Joyce scored 22, Carter Schwab had 14, and Nick Leerar had 11 for Bishop Garrigan. Aiden Stensrud scored 15 on 6/7 from the field, and Lance Helming had 12 for Lake Mills, as Helming surpasses 1000 career points. The Golden Bears were able to hold Lake Mills to just 1/5 on three pointers, but the Bulldogs made up for the lack of threes by shooting 54.8% from the field and making 14/17 free throws. Lake Mills also turned the basketball over just five times in the win.
