–The Algona Community School Foundation handed out the 2024 Dorothy Laird Professional Development Award this week to a Special Education teacher at Algona High School. Foundation spokesperson Barb Teeter tells KLGA News the award was set up by the family of Dorothy Laird, a longtime Kindergarten teacher in Algona.

This year’s recipient is Joe Taylor, who is currently taking classes to secure a Master of Education Administration degree. Teeter says this is just another way the foundation can assist Algona students.

Taylor receives a $750 grant which will be used to offset some of his tuition costs. The Algona Community School Foundation provides college scholarships to students each year and grants to teachers to assist with classroom needs across the district.
