–The Sheriff of Emmet County was taken into custody over the weekend for allegedly operating under the influence in the Iowa Great Lakes area.

A criminal complaint filed in Dickinson County by an Enforcement Officer from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources alleges 61-year-old Michael Martens of Estherville was intoxicated while operating a UTV near the Marble Beach State Recreation Area, on the west side of Big Spirit Lake Saturday night.

The complaint alleges that Martens was operating a side-by-side Saturday, in an area where those vehicles are prohibited. The DNR Officer conducted a stop and noted the smell of alcohol, at which point he had Martens conduct a field sobriety test.

Martens was booked into the Dickinson County Jail on a charge of OWI-1st offense. He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Dickinson County Court on July 1st.
