Estherville Woman Charged After Hit-and-Run with a Child

–An Estherville woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly hitting a child with her car Sunday in Ruthven.

According to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies responded to the report of a child being struck by a car in Ruthven just after 6:20 PM Sunday. Upon arrival, it was determined that a 5-year-old had been riding a bicycle on Carr Street in Ruthven, when a 2015 Buick Enclave, driven by 22-year-old Laticia Whiting of Estherville, allegedly crossed the center line and struck the child.

Whiting allegedly fled the scene, however Police officers in Spirit Lake later located the vehicle she was driving.

Palo Alto County Deputies arrested Whiting on charges of Leaving the Scene of a Accident Resulting in Serious Injury, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, Driving on the Wrong Side of a Two-Lane Highway, and Having an Open Container of Alcohol. She was booked into the Palo Alto County jail to await an initial court appearance.

The child was initially taken to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg before being transported to Sioux Falls for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
