–Local Law Enforcement agencies are taking to social media to alert area residents of a scam that has been around for many years and is seeing a recent resurgence.

The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, Algona Police Department, and other Law Enforcement agencies across Iowa and Minnesota are warning residents not to be taken in by the “Grandparent” scam. These scams prey on the elderly population, as individuals make contact and tell them that a grandchild, niece or nephew, has been arrested and they need money immediately.

The caller will request the victim meet them somewhere or come to their residence to arrange payment. Victims are also told a gag order is in place, and there will be penalties if they talk about the situation.

Law Enforcement agencies want area residents to be aware that these scams are being perpetrated locally, and they hope people will speak up before they become a victim themselves.

If you receive a call of this nature, do not give out any personal information or agree to anything. Gather any information they give you and then call the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office or the Algona Police Department, depending on where you reside.
