–The Algona City Council voted this week to hire another full-time police officer to work directly with the Algona Community School District. This new hire will serve as a School Resource Officer while classes are in session and a patrol officer during the summer months. Algona Police Chief Bo Miller says they will have a 2-step hiring process for the position.
The Algona Community School District will cover 75% of the costs associated with hiring another officer, with the city covering the remaining 25% of costs. The officer would start serving as a School Resource Officer when classes begin this August.
The Algona School Board approved the hiring of an SRO during their meeting in January. Miller says if they find an internal applicant to take the position, then the new hire will serve as a full-time officer for the Police Department.
