–The Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge will open their Auto Tour route for 10 days to celebrate Migratory Bird Day. Refuge Manager Ed Meendering tells KLGA News that as the temperatures start to rise, they are seeing more activity on the refuge.

The auto tour will open on Friday, May 9th and will remain open through Sunday, May 18th and starts at the refuge headquarters, nearly six miles east of Bancroft on County Road A42. Meendering says everyone makes adjustments when the water level is higher.

While the wildlife activity is picking up, Meendering says the tour probably won’t be as colorful as it will be later this summer.

For the first time this year, area residents will be allowed to drive on the trail in a side-by-side UTV if they want, or they can take the tour in their car or truck. The route is open sunrise to sunset from the 9th through the 18th, and Refuge staff remind residents that the wildlife tends to be more active either early in the day or closer to sundown, when temps are a bit cooler.
