–Leaders in the Emmetsburg School District are continuing with efforts to build a new elementary building in the community after a bond referendum failed to garner enough votes last year. Superintendent Cory Jenness tells KLGA News that they sought out feedback from area residents after last year’s vote.

Last summer the Emmetsburg School Board entered into a purchase agreement for land near the Iowa Lakes Community College campus to construct the new elementary building.

Another concern that surfaced revolved around what would become of the current West Elementary building if a new school is built.

Jenness says they have been working for the last 8 months to try and bring the overall project costs down.

He says they also have a plan in place that would make sure the current elementary building does not become an eyesore.

The bond issue will be on the November 4th ballot and will need 60% voter approval to pass. Last year’s $30 Million referendum received majority support from the community, but it did not meet the 60% threshold.
