–Area residents will have the chance to discuss how cancer has impacted their lives during a listening session next week in Emmetsburg. Cody Smith is the Director of Climate Initiatives for the Iowa Environmental Council, and he tells KLGA News they have teamed up with a couple other groups who are concerned with Iowa’s rising cancer rates.

Iowa has the 2nd highest cancer rate in the country, with the number of cases rising faster here than any other state. Smith says this is one of the reasons they have embarked on these listening sessions across the state.

This will be the 11th listening session held across the state, with 5 more scheduled over the next week. Smith says they appreciate all of the participation they have had thus far.

Smith says the events are truly listening sessions, led by those who attend.

The listening session will be held on Tuesday, August 5th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM at the Emmetsburg Public Library. There is no cost to attend, but they would appreciate preregistration so they know how many people to expect. You can sign up for the meeting online at www.iaenvironment.salsalabs.org/paloaltocountylistening/index.html.
